At JNELC, we understand the growing importance of sustainability in today’s world. Over the past year, we have dedicated ourselves to learning more about this critical topic, making it a key focus for our company and the entire amusement industry. Our team has actively participated in various webinars and conferences, discussing ways we can help protect the planet while continuing to innovate and create exciting attractions for our clients.
Sustainability is not just a trend for us; it’s a responsibility. Through these events, our employees have gained valuable knowledge on topics such as reducing carbon footprints, eco-friendly designs, and the future of green technology in amusement parks. It has been inspiring to see how the industry is evolving, and we are excited to be part of this important movement.
In addition to our educational efforts, JNELC has been involved in an in-depth Sustainability Research Project. This project was the graduation work of João Camurri Fiães, a talented student from Breda University of Applied Science. João spent five months researching sustainability practices across 20 amusement parks in Europe. His study focused on how these parks are implementing sustainable measures and what more can be done to ensure a greener future for the industry. We were proud to present the findings of this Sustainability Research at IAAPA Expo Europe in Amsterdam, this September.
The research revealed some interesting insights. It categorized the parks into three groups based on their approach to sustainability: Beginners, Influencers, and Shapers. While many parks have started adopting sustainable practices, most still need to set clear and measurable goals. João’s findings emphasized that there is a significant gap between parks that are just starting and those leading the charge in sustainability. Parks that fall into the “Shapers” category, like Disneyland Paris and Europa-Park, are setting an excellent example by publishing sustainability reports and focusing on long-term environmental goals. On the other hand, many parks still have a lot of work to do, especially when it comes to creating transparent and specific objectives for reducing their environmental impact.
This research has provided us with valuable insights into where the amusement industry currently stands and what improvements are needed. At JNELC, we believe that by working together, manufacturers and theme parks can create more sustainable rides and experiences. One of the key takeaways from the research is the need for greater collaboration across the industry. By sharing knowledge and working on joint sustainability initiatives, the amusement industry can make a significant impact in reducing its environmental footprint.
Sustainability isn’t about perfection— it’s about progress.
